Control-Mastery theory does not explicitly incorporate Bowlby/Ainsworth attachment theory. Nevertheless, attachment-related concepts permeate the theory. This is most evident in the theory's use of the concept of "safety" and its stress of the therapeutic importance of the patient-therapist relationship. Control-Mastery theory emphasizes the cooperative working relationship between the therapist and the patient in disconfirming the patient's pathogenic beliefs.
