Isa Sammet and Joseph Brockmann
The pain about Joseph Weiss' death goes far beyond the ocean over to Europe. We, (Joseph Brockmann and Isa Sammet from Germany) are very sad about this great loss. Joseph Weiss' compelling work has greatly influenced our scientific and clinical activities in the field of dynamic psychotherapy. His work has not only helped us to understand "how psychotherapy works", but it has given us major insights into the essentials of "mental functioning".
During the annual March Workshops, we came to know Joseph as a charismatic and hospitable person amidst his active San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group. We particularly appreciated his interest and open-mindedness concerning any kind of questions. This was the starting point for many fruitful discussions which helped us develop our own approach to many essential issues.
We reported about Joseph Weiss' significant work in many lectures, seminars and publications here in Germany. We shall continue to do so in the future. Our presentations about his creative humanistic theory regarding the development of symptoms, the psychotherapeutic process and the diverse scientific research results which support this theory have always got a positive resonance.
The central humanistic ideas of his theory correspond to his personality. This was characterized by respect for and acceptance of other people. He did not impose his important insights and results on others. As an example, we want to quote from his e-mail reply to our request regarding ideas for a research project on Control Mastery Theory. His reply started with the following sentence: "I think that you would have the most fun and do the best work if you did research on a topic that especially interested you."
We are grieving over the loss of a great psychotherapy researcher and psychoanalyst and we bemoan the death of a very special person.
